Guest Blog ~ Bird Rock Hotel ~ Hotels in Friday Harbor
let’s get the conversation started…
we want to know what everyone thinks of bird rock hotel. that’s how we improve. we are, of course, shameless praise-seekers and we love exultation. we also love hearing what you might do differently if you were in our shoes. please, tell us what works for you, and what doesn’t, and we’ll make every attempt to exceed your expectations on every visit.

Hi steff i just emailed your email you told me to, i just got on here its been a couple weeks since your posting on here but i wanted to tell you i did email as you wanted to figure something out. thanks jeff and chiane

Hi Jeff and Chiane,
Thank you so much for taking the time to let us know about your stay.
On our website we have to approve all comments to avoid spam. I just got around to going through this weekend’s comments. Please be assured we want to know what you have to say, good and bad. Only through constructive criticism like yours can we learn in which areas we are lacking, and make our hotel a better place.
I’m so sorry you had a sleepless night and were in general somewhat unsatisfied.
I was not aware of the jets not working in your room. Would you be so kind to let us know which room you stayed in (we had a couple of Jeff’s this weekend:) We will have that fixed as soon as possible.
It made me sad to hear you didn’t like our breakfast. It is continental, yes, but we usually impress our guests with our homemade scones, fresh local fruit platters and our locally sourced dairy products, grown without harmful pesticides and growth hormones. What would you have liked to see which we didn’t provide?
On a small island we are maybe a little more aware of issues like waste, water etc. So we don’t like the idea of providing plastic water bottles in the guest fridges. But we have filtered water (even though our tap water is fine)available in the lobby, carafes available upon request. I will make sure our staff let’s everybody know this in the future. Thank you for pointing this out.
Along the same lines: everything on this island is more expensive than on the mainland, labor, utilities, garbage, repairs of any kind. Everything, from pillow to nail to most food, needs to be shipped or flown over. Those expenses make our rooms a little more expensive than something equivalent on the mainland.
The noise, oh Jeff and Chiane, I can’t tell you what all we have tried to get this issue resolved. As I wrote in our guest directories, we have begged, threatened and screamed. We are currently working on getting a noise ordinance put in place, which the previous town council didn’t approve. We try to be very up front about the issue, so when it is a holiday weekend our guests aren’t disappointed.
Having said all that, we don’t like you feeling cheated, unhappy and unrelaxed. What can we do to make it up to you? Please email me at steffi@earthboxmotel.com and we’ll figure something out (I worked this weekend and will have a couple of days off, so you will hear from me on Thursday).
Again, thank you for your input. We hope you got a chance to enjoy our island and our town.
Sincerely,
Steffi Wehner

So i dont know why my posting was delted but i thought they wanted honest comments to make guest happier and now my comment is not on here
July 4th, 2010 at 5:38 pm
Also to our previous comment i thought that the shower head could have been alot better than having a manual valve to turn it on on the actual shower head and i thought the fridge cuold have been stocked with some free water or something at least.

we stayed in the bird rock hotel on july 3rd 2010 which was yesterday and for almost $300 dollars we thought that the hotel could have worked better half the jets didnt work and the noise was horrible we dont complain about anything usually but nobody should have to pay 300 dollars tobe awakened by the bar 10 steps away from the hotel room window at 2 am when everyone leaves the bar earplugs or not it doesnt justify the price for one night in this room, also the free breakfast was only some hard boiled eggs and some cereal not what we were expecting our stay overal was fine but the noise was justified for the price.

We stayed there June 21 and 22nd , 2010. We had the Bainbridge suite. 2 nice bedrooms, separate from each other and they share one nice bathroom. The beds slept great and loved the theme of clean white covers and pillows. The Huge bath tube was awesome with 2 shower heads. Loved that!! Lots of hot water for that tub too. Nice breakfast and bikes to ride to get exercise or to just cruise around the town. Friendly staff and was very helpful. The noise was not bad, but do wear your ear plugs or you will be awakened about 5 am while the grocery store next door unloads there truck, but I wear ear plugs anyway and that was not a problem for me. I will stay there again next visit to Friday Harbor. THanks for all that was done to help our stay even better.

The day before our vacation started, I injured my back at work. Walking was almost impossible. On arrival to Bird Rock Hotel we learned that stairs were the only way to our third floor room. After we got to our room, I learned that the restrooms were down on the second floor. Our vacation seemed to be becoming a nightmare. After we settled into our room, I am pleased to tell you that the nightmare was over. That was the best night sleep I have ever had in a hotel bed. My back even felt a little better when we got up. Still hurting some, we went down to a nice continental breakfast. When the hotel staff learned of my problem, they insisted on moving us to a ground floor room right away. I will tell you that I have never stayed at a hotel that cared so much about their guests. What started out a nightmare, turned into a fantastic experience. Thanks to the wonderful, caring staff at Bird Rock Hotel. We can’t wait to return.

I stayed in the Orcas room and found it great. Sucks being on a hilly street (added car noise) but I was ready for that and it didn’t bother me too much. I onced lived on a street with a similar incline. I must say that after a day of touring the island it was great to come back to a room with an HDTV including HD programming. Not many hotels/inns include the HD programming with their flatscreens. Big plus since it was NCAA Tournament weekend! Since this was March, the room temp was always comfortable but I did wonder how that room might heat up in the summer. Didn’t notice any air conditioning other than a ceiling fan. The bed was super comfortable. The only warning about the hotel area I would give to other travelers is watch the ferry landing times and realize the traffic in the immediate area multiplies quickly when the ferry unloads. The staff you have is great, helpful and the local knowledge can’t be beat. Thanks for the nice stay.

Thanks, Lesa. We’re so glad that you had a good time. Hopefully we’ll get the chance to ply you with cookies and massages and scones again some time!

Hi guys, I just surfed over here after recommending your hotel to someone. I realized I’d never given you some written kudos, so here you go! WOW, what a lovely space you have there. Such a restive, soothing atmosphere you’ve created… (And the scones! The cookies! OMG!!) Our hostess was right on target with recommendations for day trips, meals and massages. I felt so welcomed and at home there that when we checked out I felt like my husband and I hade made a bunch of good friends. It was a trip to remember, and I know we’ll return soon!

What wonderful place/staff/pillows/
view/breakfast/weather/(really!)getaway. Anyone (truly, anyone) who simply (profoundly!) needs a night or two or three or… to center down, this is the place.
Grateful blessings!

We stayed at the Bird Rock Hotel during the first weekend of February and it was a great experience. The staff couldnt do enough for us, the scones in the morning were to die for and the weather was incredible. We went kayaking with San Juan Outfitters, Brian and Aileen who were outstanding. Our room was perfect and was well equiped. Highly recommend both this hotel and kayaking firm. We had a wonderful time and will be back again for sure.

Hay Bird Rock, my wife and I have been coming out to the BRH from Langley over hear on Whidbey Island for the past few years on New Years Eve to celebrate the New Year and our wedding anniversary. We missed the past 2 years and were pleasantly surprised to see the new look and the up grades, out standing job. This New Year we had the San Juan. After my wife gave me a lesson on the coffee pot (much too simple for an engineer) and I realized the fan in the bed room area had its own control things went as smooth as we are use to. As usual we had a great time at New Years Eve and the BRH was a real plus to our little new years kick off. Thank you for the great job, keep it up and we will see you for our 2010/11 kick off.

Just a note to let you know how much we enjoyed our stay at the Bird Rock Hotel. To Debbie and all of the staff who made our stay so pleasant and personal, we thank you! We loved the mornings, not only the breakfast, but the ability to meet and socialize with the other guests and share experiences.
We also wish to thank the staff that brought us breakfast the night before we left to catch the 6 a.m. ferry to Anacortes. How very thoughtful!
Gary and I wish all of you the very best!
Until our paths cross again,
Liz

hey stephanie. adam here, owner of brh. i want to reiterate what our manager steffi told you. we are really, deeply sorry your visit went awry. i guess steffi already told you the deliveries aren’t supposed to come until after 7am and we’ll continue to do our best to hold our neighbor to their agreement. she also explained that our maintenance person repaired the shower head and she met with the housekeepers to make sure the cups and refrigerators are being properly maintained. the coffee maker doesn’t require a paper filter it turns out. sorry that wasn’t clear. also, i get what you’re saying about the cheerios, but so many people love them and we try to give the people what they want, like the local duck eggs, skagit valley berries and dairy and the fresh baked scones. do you have a couple cereal suggestions we might try? we’re always looking for new ideas and would appreciate your input.
finally, again, so, so sorry. we all know how precious vacation time is, especially in these uncertain times. your trips away from home are meant to recharge your soul, and that’s our goal at brh. the best way we learn to do that is from hearing from folks like you who love and appreciate our efforts enough to let us know when we miss the mark.
thanks!

Stayed at the bird rock hotel for the past few nights. The customer service was fantastic, and the hotel was clean and bright. The location was also lovely (except for the noise)!
I had wondered about the earplugs by the bedside upon entering the room for the first time. I found out at 5am the next day that there was a loading dock outside our room window. We stayed in the Speiden room. The shower/whirlpool tub was awkward to use. The shower head lacked pressure and because of the two heads (one which had a clog) you got spluttered in the face by one while washing under the other. Not particularly soothing. We had a coffee maker in our room, as advertised, but at 4am this morning we discovered no filters=( Other things were lacking too. We were only given one coffee cup the 2nd day and our mini fridge smelled like somethin went bad in it. My last complaint is that the continental breakfast provides cheerios. For the price of the stay I would expect a more creative and impressive.

We had a wonderful time on our vacation to Washington. I had saved the Bird Rock for our special last stop before our return across the nation. We slept so soundly in the wonderful bed in the Marrowstone Suite. The desk staff were so helpful in guiding us to great island sights. My only regret was that the weather was to warm to light the beautiful fireplace. The only improvement I would recommend is the platform on the king bed is a little tough on the shins. It’s very easy to bang your legs rounding the bed. Trimming the corners might take care of it without taking from the look.

Hello there,
We just returned from a weekend there having used a 2 1/2 year old gift certificate my kids gave me. The hotel still had it on file and did not flinch about honoring it, though I believe it went by another name back then.
I found it to be very clean and modern. The bed was very comfortable, the location was perfect, and the staff were professional and helpful. I was surprised by the noise level at 4 in the morning, and would try another room next time, but will definitely return. The only thing I would suggest needs improvement is the coffee. A good cup of coffee is essential for getting the day started on the correct foot.
Thank you!

Hi, I’d just like to say that I like the very professionally made website and your rooms are absolutely beautiful. Thanks, Drew

Thank you, thank you! I’ve been waiting twenty years to see Friday Harbor! As a single mom…I was finally able to get AWAY. I loved the Bird Rock and the staff went above and beyond the call of duty. Due to poor planning on my part, I arrived on the last ferry…long after the 6pm hotel deadline. At 10:30, we were greeted by the owner with a smile anyway. She also arranged a late dinner for us across the street at Herb’s.
I’ve also waited 20 years to see Orca..and I did. I cried like a baby seeing these beautiful creatures in the most majestic of settings.
Thank you Bird Rock for helping my dreams come true and putting up with my crazy schedule on the West Coast. I’ll be back for sure.

Wow, thank you for the great stay. The staff was great, very helpful. We loved the atmosphere of the hotel, it was a great, relaxing stay. We stayed two nights with the Tuesday Super Saver package in the San Juan Suite.
If you are looking for a place to stay on San Juan, this is it. We’re definitely coming back.

My son and I had a great time at the Bird Rock and would recommend it to anyone!!! It was our starting point, the rest of our trip could not compare. Thanks to everyone!!!

Hi Robert; I am so sorry we missed your comment before your visit! Did we get your questions answered in person? How was your stay?
March 11th, 2009 at 11:10 am
Hello:
My wife and I are planning a trip to the hotel this weekend (we have reservations). We know it is the off season and a number of dining spots are closed. Can you recommend 2 nice dining places and some activities? Should we leave our car or bring it to the island with us?
Robert

Hey Joshua,
So glad to hear that you’re coming back this month. What a great way to celebrate your wife’s birthday.
Yes, things are still a bit quiet here in March, but we can definitely hook you up with kayaking and a great massage afterward. Just let us know when you’re coming and we’ll take care of you!
February 28th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
My husband and I stayed at your hotel last July to celebrate his birthday. It was fabulous! I can’t remember the name of the suite, but it was on the ground floor near the lobby and facing the street. We only stayed one night and wished our stay was longer. The bed was so comfy and the jetted tub was fantastic. The breakfast was a special treat and the service was top notch. We also had a couples side by side massage at Elements down the street. It was so wonderful. I told everyone about the Bird Rock Hotel. We will definitely be staying here again. Thank you!
February 28th, 2009 at 12:56 am
A note to anyone considering staying at the Bird Rock Hotel. This hotel is EXCELLENT! You will not find a nicer, more accomodating staff. When we stayed in 2005 we were in the Marrowstone suite. The bed was comfy, the breakfast delicious, the privacy amazing, and the staff was extremely helpful. The bar across from the hotel wasn’t a problem at all. The private hot tub was nice to relax in after hiking all day. I highly reccomend that you stop shopping around and book this hotel today. Also, my wife and I loved coming here during the quiet season. Trust me, while there may not be as many activities going on, you will not be dissapointed.
Laura,
I am a return customer from before the renovations. I was there in the quiet season of 2005. I plan to return for a visit in March as a surprise trip for my wife’s birthday. I was wondering if the Kayak package and massage package are going to be available? I know it’s the quiet season still, but I was really hoping that the kayaking would be available. Do you have any other activities that are fun to participate in during the quiet season?

We stayed at the Bird Rock for our honeymoon this past August and fell in love with it. We didn’t want to go home! The staff was friendly and helpful, the amenities so luxurious, and the deco so funky and cool! We were quite impressed especially since there were no comments prior to making reservations and booked on a whim.
We miss the warm scones and fresh fruit every morning and the homemade chocolate chip cookies and strawberry lemonade every evening! We have told everyone to stay at Bird Rock when they are visiting the SJs and we can’t wait to come back.
September 10th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
Well, thank you, Little Miss Sunshine for the lovely things you had to say. We are looking forward to having you visit again soon.
HOT TUB
Spa Pro will come tomorrow right at 11 and drain the tub and refill. It will then take about 8 hours to fully heat. Please tell the guests checking in that day, that all will be hot around 7 PM.
Spa Pro comes every Thursday. Give them a ring if we have a major problem, so they can plan to spend more time here or “do” us first thing in the morning.
FOOD
Ordered produce for Friday. How many eggs are we going through per week right now? 10 doz? The hens at Synergy are laying again and I’m wondering if I should grab some in between Lacrover eggs on Saturdays?
September 8th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
I stayed at the Bird Rock Hotel this past weekend and I have to say it was one of the better hotels that I have stayed at in a long time. The staff was fabulous, the room was modern and relaxing. I loved it! I would recommend staying there anytime. I stayed in the Whidbey suite which was the basement suite and it was completely enjoyable. We didn’t hear a single thing…we were wondering what the ear plugs were for?
I would highly recommend this place!
August 14th, 2008 at 10:18 pm
Hey there Tami! If you arriving via a private plane your best bet is a taxi. Feel free to call the front desk before you take off and we can arrange it for you. We look forward to having you at Bird Rock. Have a nice trip
August 11th, 2008 at 10:28 pm
We will be arriving on the island via private plane. What would be the best transportation option to get to you after we arrive?
July 23rd, 2008 at 3:21 pm
We celebrated our 17 year anniversary at your lovely hotel this last weekend. We stayed in the Orcas room and except for the rowdies at the bar (thanks for the ear plugs) we had a wonderful stay. Toby was so accomodating, polite, cheerful, and just plain awesome. He took great care of us. The cookies and lemonaid were so yummy and just what we needed walking in the door. Breakfast was scrumptious as well and fueled us for our kayaking trip. Only suggestion would be to have little salt and pepper shakers on the tray and water bottles in the room. We can’t wait to come back and stay with you again. Hopefully next time we’ll have a chance to take the bikes out for a spin.

A hotel is an establishment that provides paid lodging, usually on a short-term basis. The provision of basic accommodation, in times past, consisting only of a room with a bed, a cupboard, a small table and a washstand has largely been replaced by rooms with modern facilities, including en-suite bathrooms and air conditioning or climate control.
Realhotel.info contains details about hotel such as Posada Camino Real Hotel, Oaxaca Hotel, Presidente Hotel Mexico, Hotel Lisbona, Hotel Acapulco, Hotel Cuernavaca, Hotel Guadalajara, Hotel Veracruz, Hotel Manzanillo, Hotel Monterrey, Hotel Tijuana, Hotel Torreon, Hotel Booking.

I haven’t actually stayed yet, but just booked a reservation for Labor Day weekend. I make an annual San Juan Islands trip with girlfriends…have done for years. We have been in private rentals, lodges, on a houseboat…always something different and fun. But seriously, the Bird Rock Hotel looks SO SO terrific, I can imagine making this our annual destination. I’m excited about my upcoming trip! And I’ll definitely report back.
June 11th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
I would suggest the Bird Rock to everyone!
Last month (May) my fiance and I stayed in the Marrowstone Suite. It was great! the bathroom is very large, the bed is unbelieveably comfortable and the breakfast was yummy!
This hotel is in a great location too! The drug store, theater and several restaurants are all within walking distance.
Lastly, the hotel staff was wonderful!(Good customer service is hard to find these days but Bird Rock has it).
I think this was probably the greatest hotel experience I have had.
We look forward to coming back!

My husband and I had to find a last minute place to stay in Friday Harbor. To our everlasting gratitude, Laura Saccio (co-owner of Bird Rock Hotel) did her best to come through… and what a place it is!
Bird Rock has just opened after an extensive make-over, from charming and funky to sleek and chic. From the beds (most comfy I’ve slept on in years) to the look (all cool fawny colors that feel great to a tired traveler) to the great breakfast delivered to our door (check out the fruit plate and the warm scones) … it was simply great.
This hotel is very small, and appears to be much loved by the owners. Whoever did the interior for the new renovation has quite an eye. I kept thinking it would be a perfect place for a family reunion or a retreat. It’s located in the middle of the small town of Friday Harbor, where the focus is on the experience of the San Juans. The staff helps to set up Orca viewing trips or cycling.
A single not-so-great feature is the bar across the street, which offers a fun place to hang, as well as some noise from the revelers. Just depends on your point of view.
I strongly recommend Bird Rock, but you might want to make your reservations well in advance, something we didn’t do! I have a feeling this place is going to be a very popular spot for some time to come.
May 25th, 2008 at 11:11 am
Come…You need a vacation!
The economics of bringing a car really depend on how long you are planning on staying on the island. If you’re only going to be here a few days, I would recommend leaving your car in Anacortes. It will not only be cheaper, but you can avoid having to wait in line for the ferry both coming and going. Also, we have a wonderful transit system on the island (www.sanjuantransit.com) which goes around the island every hour and stops at most of the island’s hot spots. They will even pick you up at ELEMENTS if you (or we) call them ahead of time.
We have refurbished all of our rooms! So, come, enjoy, relax!
May 25th, 2008 at 10:55 am
Hi-
We’ve never been to the San Juans, but looking to come in July as a stop over between Seattle to Vancouver for a few days. We’ll want to see as much as possible across multiple islands. Is it more affordable to leave our rental car at the ferry in Anacortes or bring our car along to explore, any thoughts? Also, are all of your rooms completed in the refurb or are you still going through some construction and updating is some? Thanks and we’ll hopefully see you in July!!
May 20th, 2008 at 11:07 am
I love what you have done with the place, it looks very European, can not wait to visit someday.
Liz
April 22nd, 2008 at 10:56 pm
Kate,
July is a great time to visit. The weather is beautiful, the whales are usually around (in fact, they’re already here), there is lots to see and do, but parking in town can be tricky. We don’t have any dedicated parking right at Bird Rock, but you do have the option to park at Elements hotel & spa, our sister property, three (short) blocks away. In fact, not only do you get to use their parking lot, but you also get to use their pool, sauna, hot tub, spa, etc, all at no charge.
One other option may be to leave your car behind and take the ferry or fly to the island. There is a great shuttle bus (www.sanjuantransit.com) which runs that time of year that goes around the whole island every hour.
Please let us know if you have any other questions!
April 22nd, 2008 at 10:50 pm
Jo Ann,
Thank you for checking us out. I apologize for the delay in responding to you. My husband, Adam, is our web guru and he’s been off kayaking for the last week. I had to wait until he was within phone range to respond. Now that’s a kink we have to work out…
In response to your question, while we love old, sleepy dogs we don’t allow them to stay at Bird Rock Hotel. There is, however, an excellent lodging facility for your fuzzy friend called Downtown Dog (www.downtowndogwash.com). That’s where we take Roxie, our 4-year old lab (read my 3rd child, or maybe my 4th when you include my husband…) when we go out of town. Roxie loves it there so much she’s excited to see us, but thinks that maybe she could just stay another day, please Mom, please. They take dogs out to the beach three times a week on their Bow Wow Bus. It’s quite a site to see this bus go by with a bunch of dogs’ heads sticking out. You can see it on their website. Another option is our sister property Elements hotel & spa where we do have pet friendly rooms. Please let us know if you have any other questions.
April 22nd, 2008 at 10:37 am
We will be visiting in July. Is there any problem parking at the hotel as we will be bring a car to see the island.
April 17th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
What is your pet policy? We have an old, sleepy dog we can’t bear to leave behind. Is she welcome too?
Your property looks wonderful and we’d love to visit soon.
Thanks!
April 13th, 2008 at 10:03 am
hi patty,
we haven’t put together the packages yet, but they’re likely to include a dining voucher, an activity like whale watching or sea kayaking and a night or two at bird rock. it won’t be a discounted item so much as package that makes it real easy for you to experience the best san juan island has to offer. even before we have the packages listed, though, we can do all this for you. if you have an idea what you want, just email us at stay@birdrockhotel.com and we’ll build you a personal package…. thanks for your interest!
April 6th, 2008 at 11:01 am
My husband and I are thinking of coming that way this summer (early July) and I was wondering about the convenience packs you mentioned. Any details?
April 2nd, 2008 at 5:58 pm
Yes! I am just about to post a new intro special for second nights free in superior rooms. the deal is only valid for sun-wed arrivals through may 21, though. does that fit in your schedule? in the summer we will offer some packages that bundle activities together with rooms, but they won’t be discounts so much as convenience packs. thanks for thinking of us….
March 29th, 2008 at 10:29 am
HI, was browsing and tripped over your site. My wife and I will be celebrating our 5th anniversary and are considering San Juan area. Do or will you have any type of packages? I am also looking forward to some kayaking and hiking. Going to the Elements website now to see more.
Thank you!
March 15th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
Hi Adam,
Thanks for your reply and the recommendations for Backdoor Kitchen and Steps Wine Bar. I’m actually searching for a restaurant to have our Rehearsal Dinner so thanks!
We will definintely drop by in April as we have to do a site visit with our photographer.
Cheers,
Summerbride2008
March 6th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Summerbride2008, Thanks for those suggestions. Surprisingly to many, there is a hip side of San Juan Island beginning to unfurl. Bird Rock Hotel is the pinnacle of course (toot, toot), and ELEMENTS hotel & spa is kind of the flagship. Sounds like you know about ELEMENTS. Let me recommend also eating at Backdoor Kitchen and Steps Wine Bar and Cafe, both in Friday Harbor. Then there’s a new kayak operator on the other side of the island who is setting up to appeal to the same market we tend to attract. San Juan Outfitters is his company, but his site’s not up yet.
When you’re in town this summer, definitely drop by Bird Rock Hotel to see what all the fuss is about. I know we’re not hosting your wedding, but we’d love to host many, many, many anniversaries and we wish you as much happiness as your cup can hold….
March 5th, 2008 at 6:34 pm
You guys rock! I love the clean lines of the rooms and the website. Edgy – in a good way.
March 2nd, 2008 at 1:29 am
Hi There,
Congrats on your soon-to-be open facility! I have been anxiously following the Bird Rock updates via Hotel Elements and am excited for this unique addition to San Juan Island.
I love that the Bird Rock is a small boutique-hotel.
A suggestion would be to possibly implement special promotions or themeed packages for those looking for something tailored and hip to do on San Juan Island as there are very few. Perhaps a ‘Girlfriend’s Getaway’ or a ‘Spa Weekend’ or a ‘Seattle to San Juan Swich where city meets island luxe’.
I do hope to visit sometime soon!
Cheers,
Summerbride2008
