Solo Trip Tips San Juan Island

Posted on March 25, 2019

Travelling solo is an empowering opportunity to become more in touch with yourself—to build confidence and to learn what is important to you. Nothing makes you feel more present than finding out what it is you want and caring for your needs. One of my favorite spots for a solo weekend getaway is San Juan Island. It’s close, yet feels far away from it all. It’s safe and offers fun activities for every mood and every budget. Come explore and find yourself.

Where to Stay

The adorable Bird Rock Hotel in the heart of Friday Harbor, features 15 unique rooms. The Simple Rooms, European guest rooms with shared baths, are among the best lodging value on the isle, especially in the high season. Bird Rock offers a gourmet continental breakfast, free beach cruiser bikes to check out and the use of the pool, sauna & hot tub at their sister hotel, the Earthbox Inn & Spa, just two blocks away. The super friendly, knowledgeable staff always has time to chat, knows the hottest things to do in town and loves to help you plan your day.

Be Safe

San Juan Island and Friday Harbor are safe and friendly. Don’t hesitate to ask for help, you’re even likely to make a new friend. When going hiking, kayaking, whale watching, or out for dinner, tell somebody, a fellow traveler, your front desk staff, a friend at home, what you are up to. Avoid unnecessary risks. When hiking, stay on marked trails, always have a map, water, a headlamp and a snack with you. When riding a bike, wear bright colors and a helmet. When going out into town at night, don’t over imbibe. Simply take the same good care of yourself that you would for a dear friend.

Nourish your Body

It’s important to get out of your head, especially when you are travelling solo. Go swimming and soak in the hot tub at the Earthbox Inn & Spa, before pampering your beautiful body (yes, you are stunning!) with a treatment at the onsite Spa at Earthbox. Indulge in a sumptuous Farm-to-Table dinner and a delicious island made cocktail at the adorable COHO Restaurant. Take one of our beach cruisers out for a spin or take a long after dinner walk.

Nourish your Mind

It’s artsy on the isle. San Juan County sports more working artists than any other county in the state. Get inspired by visiting the seven galleries and four museums all within walking distance of the Bird Rock Hotel. Go see a play at the San Juan Community Theatre or dance to live music at the San Juan Brewery. And don’t forget to browse Griffin Book Store for the latest island tales.

Nourish your Soul

This is your opportunity to spend your time doing whatever you want, so do it! Have cake for breakfast, go kayaking with the Orcas, then get a massage and a rejuvenating facial. Go to a Yoga class, shuck your own oysters and take a flight lesson. Go to the beach with your journal and doodle all day, then go boutiquing and antiquing in charming Friday Harbor. Make a point to do something you wouldn’t do with your family or friends back home.  This is your time to make your beautiful self happy.
