1) So Romantic

Many of the acclaimed farm-to-table restaurants in adorable Friday Harbor feature multi-course feasting experiences, including the most decadent desserts, around Valentine’s Day. Friday Harbor’s five wine bars are offering their finest bubbles, some with chocolate fondue and breathtaking water views. The whimsical Alchemy Art Center in the woods presents Sip & Sculp pottery classes for lovers, while all the cute stores and boutiques in town are laying out their finest wares for Valentine’s Day. Don’t forget to arrange for a fresh flower bouquet, island made truffles and a bottle of champagne for your Friday Harbor hotel room upon arrival.

2) No Ferry Lines

Getting here on the Washington State Ferry is so beautiful and almost worth a trip alone. While in Summer the ferries are pretty busy, sometimes late, and you absolutely need a car reservation, in February the trip over is leisurely and uncrowded. It’s recommended to have a car ferry reservation, but not an absolute must. Your vacation begins as soon as you step foot on the ferry. Feel all your tension melt away as you sail through the Salish Sea into the sunset to gorgeous Friday Harbor.

Before you book, take a look at  the amazing specials we here at the Bird Rock Hotel offer during what we call the “secret season”. Treat yourself to a massage or facial at the cute Spa at Earthbox, maybe with a CBD oil or Hot Stone add-on? Delight in the many events around town like the darling Father-Daughter Dance, a fun show at the Cabaret Corner, the free Valentine’s celebration at the renowned Island Museum of Art or the fantastic Salish Sea Early Music Festival at Brickworks with a focus on Bach and the baroque music around the time of Louis XIV.

Not only does the isle lay in the Olympic Rain Shadow and receives half the rainfall of Seattle, in February we enjoy a little Spring preview with warmer weather and the first wildflowers and apple blossoms emerging.

5) Art without Crowds

With more working artists residing on San Juan than in any other county in Washington, it is no wonder, that the isle brims with cultural events worthy of a big city. Explore a play or concert at the renowned Community Theatre, visit the three museums and nine galleries in walking distance to our Bird Rock. Do not miss the gorgeous San Juan Sculpture Park and meander their five trails along the bay lined with 8,000 emerging daffodils. What a treat.
