This Spring, treat yourself to an uncomplicated island getaway. Meander through fields of wildflowers, observe Orcas and Humpbacks in the wild and partake in the exhilarating bucket list adventures that San Juan Island has to offer, as it awakes from its Winter slumber. Here is your Spring Break San Juan Island must-do list:
- Whale & Wildlife Tour
In Spring, the majestic Humpbacks return to the Salish Sea from their breeding grounds in Hawaii and Mexico with their new babes in tow. The mammal-eating Biggs Killer Whales have been spotted as early as March just last year. There will be baby seals and sea lions and absolutely adorable baby Bald eaglets learning how to fly. Our friends at San Juan Safaris offer whale watching tours out of Friday Harbor on either their classic whale watch boat or on their super-fast super fun zodiac.
- Wildflower Hike
Climb Mount Young in English Camp National Historical Park or Mount Grant Preserve and see the island’s stunning wildflowers emerge. Bring your binoculars to watch Bald Eagles and Hawks.
- Baby Foxes on the Prairie
The prairie above South Beach in American Camp National Historical Park is home to the island renowned Red Foxes. In Spring, when mama fox goes hunting, the fluffy pups emerge from their dens and play – so cute. Always stay at least 75 feet away and never feed the foxes to keep them wild.
- Quaff the Islands Liquid Arts
San Juan Island is blessed with an array of artisan alcohol purveyors. Bike to picturesque San Juan Vineyards for a wine tasting. Visit the gorgeous San Juan Distillery and Westcott Bay Cidery for a tour and tasting on Saturdays. And don’t miss the handcrafted microbrews, good eats and live music at San Juan Brewing in Friday Harbor.
- Sea Kayak Tour
Silently gliding through the Salish Sea under the watchful eyes of harbor seals is a profound experience. Go on one of the first sea kayak tours of the season with our friends at San Juan Outfitters in Roche Harbor. They offer guided Orca search, sunset and family tours.
